Upcoming Season

As summer approaches it is time to start planning for the upcoming football season. Last season was an exciting season, in only our second year in the Saginaw Valley Conference. However, many of us know that in order to continue to succeed in our conference, it will require a greater commitment then ever before. Many of the conference schools have coaches and athletes together in sports conditioning classes throughout the school day allowing them to require athletes to train throughout the entire year. We (parents, coaches and athletes) need to make the commitment to finds ways to improve our program. I am really excited about how much improvement many of the athletes have made since the end of the football season. These athletes have been participating in morning speed training, monthly “Gameday” testing, Sunday night workouts, and continuous weight training. I have also been pleased with the increase involvement of athletes in winter and spring sports. I am a big believer that athletes should take part in as many school activities as possible. However, I also know that these same athletes need to build strength and speed throughout the year through a strength-training program. If athletes play other sports, strength and conditioning will only make them more effective in those sports, whether in-season or out.

Main Goal

The main goal or mission of this football program is to provide positive lifelong memories for each athlete and teach young men values that will prepare them for successful lives. Obviously winning games, making the playoffs, etc are an important part in reaching this mission, but not the only part. I strongly believe that athletes will get out of this sport what they put into it. I encourage everyone to put as much into our football family as possible, because in the end the reward will be greater. Those who do not put in as much will likely not get as much from the experience.

In order for athletes to see the benefit of strength and conditioning, as well as for coaches to keep track of athletes' progress, we will be testing once a month on bench reps, squat reps, 40 yd dash, vertical jump, and jump rope. All football players are expected to attend.

Summer time

Families like to use summer time to take vacations together, and rightfully so. I encourage football families to use week of July 4 th if at all possible, as we will have no football activities that week. Athletes will have no other commitments besides morning conditioning until July. I have attached a list of important dates and the July football activities that will require more time as the season approaches. Most important of those is our team camp which is July 23-26 th at the high school. We have had nearly 100% attendance at team camp each year and athletes missing camp will be behind the learning curve come the start of practice.

Strength & Conditioning

We will begin our summer strength and conditioning after school starting Tuesday, May 29 th and continuing until the last day of school (only varsity baseball and state track qualifiers will still have after school commitments). Starting the week of June 11 th we will begin our summer hours. Freshmen and JV players are expected to meet in the weight room at 8:30 am and varsity players are expected to meet at 9:00 am each day (Monday-Friday). These sessions will last 60 minutes. By giving up a short period of time each day, athletes can get an excellent coach-supervised workout that will work all phases of athletic development . In situations were athletes can't make it to the morning session, the weight room will also be open from 5:00- 7:00 pm each day for “make up” workouts.
